How do I show up in AI answers for local searches
The new front door for “who should I hire?” — and the one-week plan to be in the answer, from the team that tracks this monthly for clients.
The question
How do you show up in AI answers?
You show up in AI answers the way you show up on a shortlist: clear, direct answers an assistant can quote; business facts consistent everywhere; and genuine mentions and reviews across the web. Google's AI features build on its core ranking systems and reward genuinely useful content — there is no paid slot to buy.

The shift
Where AI answers come from
The behavior changed first. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 45% of consumers now use ChatGPT or other AI tools for local recommendations — up from 6% a generation of surveys ago. When a homeowner asks an assistant who to call, the answer assembles itself from the same raw material search always used: your site content, your Google Business Profile, your reviews and the places your business is mentioned.
That is good news, because it means the work overlaps: the deep local pages and steady reviews that win the Maps pack also feed the machines that answer the question. Our local SEO and AI search service treats them as one program.

The lever
What moves the needle
The academic work agrees with the practical work. A 2024 study on generative engine optimization (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024) found that adding citations, quotations and statistics improved visibility in generative engines — in other words, content that answers precisely and shows its sources travels furthest.
In practice, three moves earn the mentions. Write direct answers to the questions customers actually ask — the format our own guides use, a 40-to-60-word answer under every heading. Keep your facts identical everywhere, starting with your Google Business Profile, which Google's AI-search guide specifically points to for showing up in AI answers. And collect the reviews that assistants read as trust — 97% of consumers read reviews, per BrightLocal's 2026 survey, and the machines learn from the same corpus.

The dead ends
What Google says changes nothing
Spend the week on the levers, and skip the folklore. Google states that its AI features run on core ranking systems and reward non-commodity content — and it says directly that chunking tricks, llms.txt files and fake mentions of your brand across the web change nothing in Google Search. Fake reviews carry a different problem: they are illegal under the FTC's rule on consumer reviews.
The pattern behind the dead ends is consistent: anything that games the reader rather than helps them eventually counts against you. The durable version — real answers, real facts, real reviews — is also the version that converts the humans who click through.

The plan
Your one-week starter plan
Day one, ask three AI assistants who to hire for your trade in your city and screenshot the answers — that is your baseline, and the free audit automates it. Day two, fix any inconsistency in your Business Profile: categories, services, hours, description. Day three, pick the ten questions customers ask most and write the direct answers — the speed-to-lead guide is the model.
Day four, switch on a review request after every completed job — 83% of people asked will leave one, per BrightLocal 2026 — and reply to the reviews that exist. Day five, check Search Console, where the generative-AI report now shows how AI surfaces find you. Days six and seven belong to your family; the plan is one focused week — and then a monthly habit, which is exactly what our reporting automates.
